Millions of people continue to suffer from hunger across the world. Indeed, one out of every seven people suffers from hunger (3) while 20,000 children starve every day (4). Despite this, however, each year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted (1). This is enough to feed 3 billion people (2).

Not only is this wasted food not feeding hungry people, as it decomposes it is also becoming a substantial source of greenhouse gas emissions, which escalate climate change.

Asia is the second-largest food waste area in the world (5), within which Vietnam is a significant contributor. Despite this, though, the issue of food waste has received very little publicity.

Aiming to raise public awareness about the seriousness of food waste, CHANGE and the global movement for climate change 350.org in Vietnam is launching a new national campaign: “Stop Wasting Food.”

STOP WASTING FOOD

Stop Wasting Food is a long-term, multi-staged program that calls on communities to reduce food waste. The initiative has attracted support from business partners, restaurants, hotels and national media, all of whom will come together to help supply 2,000 meals for 1,000 children in Ho Chi Minh City.

The program will last for a minimum of three years and will include a wide variety of activities publicised through social media that will call on hotels and restaurants to encourage their customers to change their behaviours.

A number of artists and performers have also agreed to become goodwill ambassadors for the program. While adopting their own strategies for effective waste limitation, they will also provide meals to disadvantaged children, supporting government with practical policies in limiting food waste.

#ANHETROI

The program will start with a social network campaign entitled “EAT UP”, which will run from 5 May 2015 to 30 November 2015. Close to 30 restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City are participating in the initiative, which is aiming to generate more than 12,000 hashtags on social networks.

To take part in the campaign, diners at participating restaurants are encouraged to check-in through Facebook and then post pictures of their empty plates and bowls, adding the hashtag #anhetroi, or #eatupfood.

The campaign is intended to draw the attention of the community through stimulating a wave of online sharing of the posts, spreading the Stop Wasting Food message to around 100,000 people.

With each successful hashtag and check in, diners will have the opportunity to win rewards from restaurants, including:

• Percentage discount on receipt

• A free drink or dessert with their next meal

• Discount vouchers

Each participating restaurant will also contribute 10,000 VND per check-in toward a fund aiming to provide 2,000 meals for 1,000 disadvantaged children at shelters, charities and hospitals across Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition to raising awareness of the Stop Wasting Food campaign, the initiative will also help local restaurants to promote their environmental and community based activities.

With the help of goodwill ambassadors, the project is aimed at stimulating a national movement in food waste, through which meaningful stories can be actively discussed and shared on social networks and mainstream news and media agencies.

We are thrilled to be supported by so many restaurants and food outlets from across Ho Chi Minh City, who have enthusiastically joined the Stop Wasting Food campaign. Together we hope to raise widespread awareness of food waste, encouraging communities to join hands to take positive action for the environment and society.
